ABEL (& Moodle)

ABEL is an acronym for Advanced Broadband Enabled Learning and it is a program developed at, and currently run through, York University.  ABEL is an organization that researchs new technological tools for the classroom and supports teachers as they learn to implement these tools in their classrooms.  ABEL members have many professional learning opportunites which can occur in person or online.  An ABEL license included membership to many tools such as ABEL Moodle, Voicethread, Discovery Streaming and Turnitin.com.

ABEL offers a wonderful PD opportunity each summer through its Summer Institute.

More information about ABEL and its resources is available at www.abelearn.ca

How do I use ABEL to Encourage my Students to Think Critically?

The tools offered through an ABEL license are chosen because they are well-suited to technology in the classroom.  At the abelearn site, each tool is briefly explained and members may request an account to all offered tools.

ABEL offers a wealth of information and tools and it is suggested that people new to ABEL choose one or two tools to concentrate on for the first while.  When planning to implement an ABEL tool with a class, teachers are encourage to consider if the tool and the associated assignment will offer students an opportunity to consider "why" or "how", especially when considering various criteria, while preparing their product.

ABEL Moodle

Moodle is likely one of ABEL's more popular tools.  "Moodle is a course management system (CMS) - a software package designed to help educators create quality online courses. Such e-learning systems are sometimes also called Learning Management Systems (LMS) or Virtual Learning Environments (VLE)."  (www.abelearn.ca Feb. 3, 2011)

Many teachers in our school run their courses through a moodle.  Course notes and all associated material are stored on the moodle which students can access at any time.  An ABEL moodle easily encorporates tools such as Turnitin.com and Hot Potatoes Game Generators .  Students are able to submit assignments to teachers through the moodle and teachers can return work to students through the moodle.  A moodle is really a "super-souped-up" wiki.

An ABEL moodle is a password protected environment, thereby protecting the people who use one.  And all the material stored on a moodle is kept on a server at York University.
