Animoto is a tool that promotes itself as "the end of slideshows". It's really the end of boring, traditional slideshows. Animoto is easy to use, even for junior students. Make an Animoto video to document the progress of a special event, a project, or an assignment; create a visual alphabet, timeline, series of numbers; make a record of a moment in history, a chemical equation, a portfolio of artwork; mark a special birthday, family and memories; make a portfolio to demo original art, photography, hand-work or music.

This is a really fun and easy tool: collect art, film, photos and music, add text, submit, and wait for a professional looking movie. It's another form of digital storytelling.

Jenn is a very creative grade 12 student at Banting with a portfolio of her own original digital art. A five-minute demonstration of Animoto had Jenn hooked. She made the video "The Mind is Creative" to showcase her artwork. Note: the transitions reflect the rhythm of the music. WOW! They were right when they said professional. It was really easy, and definitely fun.

In her next video, Jennifer showcases more original artwork, using critical thinking to choose music that will enhance the atmosphere of her manga comic.

Photo file sizes are often too large and time consuming to upload. Animoto directs you to an image editing software called DroPic! to scale down filesize for web or email (or DroPic! for Mac). You'll find this tool of use for much more than just Animoto. Definitely download it.

Animoto is a sophisticated video tool that promises success to students who may be less able to work with difficult editing software, or less willing or able to narrate audio recording. Animoto exercises visual and verbal storytelling skills, and it develops problem solving and decision making skills by requiring research into image and music sourcing and attribution. It's a tool for success when lab time is limited. And, it makes you feel like a pro.

“Animoto is one of the marvels of Web 2.0. It is a wonderful initiative and a true benefit to teachers

                         and students.”    Lance Rougeux, Director
