Screencasting

   Screencasting takes teaching online!

Jennifer, a grade 11 Comm Tech student, used Jing to create a tutorial demonstration of digital drawing using Adobe Photoshop CS4. The viewer can follow Jennifer's cursor as she narrates her process. Click on the sentence below to watch the screencast. Both image and video were taken with Jing:

The most valuable part of an assignment happens after it's done, when the student explains the process to others:

Learn it, do it, teach it.

Students who screencast their work use higher level thinking skills: in Jen's video she is not only showcasing her original artwork in Photoshop, she is demonstrating the process of drawing images, explaining why she made the choices she did, and demonstrating how the program works. In a longer video she could analyse her actions, and criticize and reflect on the final project.

While the PrintScreen key on your keyboard allows you to take a still photograph of the screen, Screencasting is a video recording of the activity on the screen. Jing records the action of the mouse as it travels across the page, and records the narration of the demonstrator as she explains what is being shown. Screencasts can be embedded into wikis, blogs, forums, VoiceThread and ABEL Moodle, in an individual project or as part of a class.
